RAILWAYS IN LITHUANIA
Railways in Lithuania commemorates the year 1859, when the construction of the 1520 mm gauge St Petersburg-Warsaw railway line started. The first train arrived in Vilnius from Daugavpils on 4 September 1860.
Today, the total length of the railway network in Lithuania is 1,868.8 km: 1,745.8 km of the 1,520 mm gauge track, which stretches to the Baltic and CIS countries, and 123 km of the 1,435 mm gauge track, which connects Lithuania with Poland and, via Poland, with other Western European countries. Lithuania’s railway lines have 104 stations, 545 level crossings, 410 viaducts and bridges that require constant maintenance.

With a focus on Central and Western Europe and in line with the European Green Deal, the modernization and expansion of the rail network is a key prerequisite for the success of Europe’s railway system. Today, priority is given to investments in:
electrification of railways to reduce the greenhouse effect and meet environmental requirements,
the installation of noise abatement measures on the railway to improve the health and well-being of people living in the area,
the elimination of single level crossings and infrastructure maintenance to ensure road safety and minimise accidents,
upgrading infrastructure to meet European standards for speed and road loading,
the Rail Baltica project to connect Warsaw-Kaunas-Riga-Tallinn with an electrified double-track European rail line.
The Association of Rail Services Providers “Gelpa” unites companies providing railway transport and its development, modernization, construction, maintenance, publicity and other services. The main objective of the association is to mediate economic, legal, technical and social issues between contractors and customers.
