Would Phileas Fogg travel sustainably? 🌍🚆✈️
In 1872, a gentleman named Phileas Fogg travelled around the world in 80 days. Steamboats, trains, even elephants – we’re probably all fascinated by this journey! But his journey would have left a huge CO2 footprint, estimated at as much as 8.5 tonnes, and that’s where the glamour fades.
👉 Today, using modern vehicles, we could travel around the Earth in 18 days and leave 2.5 tonnes of CO2 behind.
👉 Choosing a sustainable journey – electric trains, low-emission ferries – would reduce the footprint to 0.4 tonnes, but the journey would take 55 days.
🎯 Conclusion? Technological progress is important, but our choices are even more important.
💡 Europe has set itself a Green Deal to become a climate-neutral continent by 2050, and one of the most important parts of this process is Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy In Lithuania, the transport sector accounts for 32% of CO2 emissions – the largest share! Today, different transport sectors are competing for customers, investment and infrastructure. But maybe it’s time for a change of sport? Instead of a competitive triathlon, it should be a cooperative relay race.
🚆🚢✈️ Each mode of transport has its own strengths. Lithuania needs a competitive, integrated transport system where transport modes complement rather than compete. There are many successful examples around the world.
🛤️ The solution? A clear transport strategy covering all modes and targeted funding. This would achieve more – both in terms of sustainability and efficiency.
💬 What do you think is the main obstacle to greater cooperation in the transport sector in Lithuania today?
These were the conclusions of the presentation by Gelpa President Vytautas Žirgutis “Sustainable Mobility in Lithuania. How to build the future of transport?” The highlights of the Road Forum 2025, the conclusions of which were also agreed in a discussion with Inga Duglas, Vytautas Radzevicius and Eduardas Grinaveckas.
